Abstract: |
We intend to use nanocellulose in edible coatings for the preservation of perishable fruits and vegetables. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Nanocellulose based edible coating seems promising when it comes to reducing environmental pollution caused by plastic packaging which will also reduce post-harvest food waste and improve the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Our idea aims to fulfill the demands of the food packaging industry in improving the shelf life of fruits and vegetables thus reducing food waste and with a significant reduction in the cost of plastic packaging which is not only hazardous for the environment but for human health as well. |
How will the solution works |
Nanocellulose such as cellulose nanofibers will be created using Maize stalk waste residues through mechanical grinding-assisted chemical treatments and edible coatings will be created using edible biopolymers such as polysaccharides. Then, nanocellulose created will be reinforced along with edible coating solution on fruits and vegetables using the electrospraying method. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Our competitors are conventional plastic food packaging industries. Our solution is focusing on sustainable packaging
while exclusively utilizing renewable, edible ingredients which degrade more readily than polymeric materials thus contributing to a sustainable future. |
