Abstract: |
In our project, we aim to create an automated mechanism to find the susceptibility of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood for any lake throughout the world, using Remote Sensing data and Machine Learning. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
GLOFs have the potential to cause significant amount of damage and destruction to lives, infrastructure, and environment in nearby regions. No automated prediction/susceptibility model exists that assists in planning sustainable cities and precautionary plans. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Communities living in highly susceptible areas to GLOF, Disaster Management organizations, NGOs which can prepare for relief operations, Researchers which can use our project as basis for future work on GLOF susceptibility or climate action will benefit from our project. |
How will the solution works |
Study area chosen is Hunza River Basin. All of the lakes in this region have been digitized, and a number of parameters will be extracted from them, which influence triggering of GLOF. This data will be used to train a Machine Learning model which classifies susceptibility as high/medium/low. This model will be deployed on a web interface on which users input parameters for any lake in the world, and our model will find its susceptibility. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
To the best of our knowledge, no other organization or project is working on an automated, model and web-based susceptibility mechanism. Some analytical techniques have been applied for GLOF susceptibility and flood models have been made, but ours is different because it is an automation. |
