Abstract: |
According to rough estimate about 25000 people die every year because of landslides. This study therefore, focused on developing a simple user friendly landslide early warning system. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Landslides are a serious problem to the human beings. Pakistan is no exception. This prototype system is designed to and tested at lab scale to test and evaluate early warning for landslides based on different sensors which will likely help vulnerable communities for timely evacuation. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Landslide is a common natural hazard in our mountainous regions like northern areas e.g. Murree Kashmir, Chitral, Gilgit Baltistan. Unfortunate incident of Gyari avalanche is not a distant history. Many vulnerable communities may use it to get early warning about the landslides in their areas. |
How will the solution works |
This is lab scale model based on 4 sensors, which will sense any tilt, strain, soil moisture and three dimensional soil movement connected through Node MCU. This is a real time early warning system which has been tested by simulating a landslide on a lab scale. The information will be automatically uploaded on website and alerts will be sent to all stakeholders through sms. This system can be replicated and tested under real time situations after necessary upgradation. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
The system is based on user friendly and cheap sensor technology, it has the potential to be upgraded and upscaled and can be used for other applications other than landslides. The early warning systems available are complex and expensive as compared to our proposed system. |
