Abstract: |
The idea is to design an assistive smart cane for the blind for feedback based on obstacle detection and easy navigation. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Blind and visually impaired people face lots of problems on daily basis. Perhaps the most important one is not being able to roam around independently. Our idea is to design a device to help these people so that they can move on their own without needing external assistance. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
This device is for those who face difficulty in vision or are completely blind. Globally, there are over 242 Million people suffering from visual impairment and blindness. There are 1.14 Million Blind and 2 Million visually impaired people only in Pakistan. |
How will the solution works |
Obstacle detection will be done using Maxsonar sensors and LIDAR connected with NodeMCU. Upon detecting an obstacle, user will be alerted via the choices that he has enabled. Vibratory patterns for alerts will be generated using piezo actuators. Sound alerts maybe provided via microphone/speaker. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Currently, 3 smart canes are present in the market. These are WeWALK, BAWA Cane and Phoenix Smart Cane. Phoenix lacks all smart features other than obstacle detection and generating alerts. So the basic competitors are WeWALK and BAWA Cane. |
