| Pressure ulcers arise in patients who are forced to remain seated for a long period of time due to certain health issues. Our cushion aims to prevent such occurrences using a smart feedback loop. |
| What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
| wheelchair patients usually have little to no sense of feeling in their lower bodies which means that they can unknowingly put excess pressure on their body developing ulcers. To help these patients, such cushions are hard to find as well as expensive, our goal is to change both these factors. |
| Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
| It has been estimated that approximately 17,730 people suffer from life altering Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in USA. These patients are forced to remain seated in a wheelchair for unhealthy periods of time, leading to pressure ulcers. The treatment of pressure ulcers can cost up to $70,000. |
| How will the solution works |
| This smart cushion, consisting of multiple compartments, takes feedback from pressure sensors and uses a microcontroller connected to a actuating mechanism to generate a response in the required compartments to relieve pressure from high pressure zones. |
| Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
| Currently we face no competitors in Pakistan. We have international competitors but the price of our product is much cheaper than theirs. Furthermore our cushion offers real-time automatic pressure changing compared to other international products that only offer high pressure alerts. |
