Abstract:
    Development of a sustainable hydrokinetic energy harvester. The water flow causes an oscillating (flapping) motion of the hydrofoil wing which drives a generator to produce electricity.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Almost half of rural population in Pakistan still lacks access to electricity. Northern areas in particular have huge potential for micro hydro-power schemes because of its topography the presence of small streams, lakes etc.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   Electricity is a basic necessity in everyday life. Hundreds of rural families will benefit from this.
How will the solution works
    The energy harvester consists of a generator driven by a oscillating hydrofoil wing. The leading edge of the hydrofoil is perpendicular to the flow of water which causes the motion of the wing. The oscillatory motion is transmitted to drive the generator through a slider crank mechanism, storing electricity in a battery. The energy produced depends on the water flow, generator capacity etc. but can power a small village.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Several NGOs have worked on micro hydro-power projects, installing conventional rotary turbines. Our product uses a different motion with a different turbine blade. Its easier to manufacture, easier to install, can work on all forms on flowing water, has no harmful effect on wildlife etc.
