Abstract:
Our project is focused on developing an intelligent prosthetic hand that uses computer vision to see objects and determine the most suitable grip pattern to grab the object.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Currently, in the market, the idea of how vision can benefit prosthetics is not adopted. The products available in the market have long training times and amputees abandon prosthetics for this reason. Our project aims to address this issue by using modern technology.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
People who have lost their hands and feel hopeless about regaining part of their body will use our product. Millions of people use prosthetic hands and our project holds the potential to revolutionize the whole development. Thousands, of people's lives, can be benefited from this idea.
How will the solution works
When the user has the intention to grab any object, an EMG signal will be generated and it will activate the main control system. A camera mounted on the palm of the prosthetic hand will capture an image of the object and a deep neural network will classify the object and determine a suitable grip pattern to pick the object. The control system then generates a signal to pick an object using defined grip patterns and the necessary force on the object will be monitored through haptic feedback.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Companies producing prosthetic hands can be considered our competitors. Our product is unique as we are trying to achieve as natural as possible user experience of prosthetics through computer vision in a combination with EMG signals and a haptic feedback mechanism.
