Abstract: |
Assistive Feeding system is a robotic manipulator system based on 5 to 6 degree of freedom robotic arm depending on end effector to help feed food to elderly and people with limited locomotive abilities. In this project we will work on an open-source robot by BCN3D and modify its end effector along with application of computer vision techniques for active and independent feeding. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
In our society and generally everywhere in world old people and people with motor limitations face difficulties or need significant assistance in performing activity of daily life such as eating and from our project we want to help all those people. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Old people and people with disabilities who without assistance cannot eat easily. Overall, approximately 11.8% of global population is in their old age. Also, patients with contagious decease can also use this e.g., as in case of COVID or any other case. |
How will the solution works |
There will be a robotic arm which will have a camera mounted on it. The camera will identify and locate the food and target person specifically his/her mouth then using inverse kinematics the robot will scoop the food and feed the target person by keeping the eating utensil at safe distance from mouth so person can take bite or swallow. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
In commercial sector there are many but all of them have passive feeding method (sort of hardcoded) and our project aims to develop system using active feeding method (vision-based scooping and feeding) while in academic sector we have 3 competitors but all of them are in research phase. |
