Abstract:
    The traditional water processing technologies are not designed to remove microplastics.Among the sorbents, magnetic biochar is most easy and cheap to prepare.Tobacco is an important cash crop of Pakistan and vast amounts of tobacco waste is discarded each year. Converting waste to magnetic biochar will contribute to environment protection as it can be used for water treatment/soil remediation.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Microplastics are emerging persistent pollutants, and research on their availability and removal in Pakistan is limited. There is an urgent need to present a removal method. To provide industries with an easy and cost effective way to recycle waste and pave the way for long-term sustainability.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   All industries strive to recycle and reuse waste ,to introduce the circular economy in a cost-effective manner. A potential opportunity will be created for industry-academia collaboration. It will be regarded as one of the main models for scientists and engineers who are working on water treatment.
How will the solution works
    The organic industrial solid waste will be pyrolyzed to create biochar(an adsorbent). Iron and zinc salts will be used to magnetise it. Microplastics with a negative charge will be combined with magnetised biochar that has a positive charge; the biochar will then adsorb the plastics, which will then be extracted by a magnet using water. The biochar that has adsorbent microplastics will undergo thermal treatment, eliminating all microplastics and regenerating biochar which can be reused.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    There is no beneficiary working on microplastic solution particularly.Biochar itself ends up creating pollution in water but magnetic biochar can easily be separated making this solution different.It will also bring a more accountable way to recycle and reuse waste within the companies.
