Abstract: |
With global population expected to reach 10B by 2050, food production & consumption has become a major problem globally. More than 600 million people fall ill each year from eating contaminated food. In the UK, traces of pig and horse DNA were found in beef-burgers. Such cases have risen concerns of consumers who expect their food to be produced ethically and transparently. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Issues with food include lack of food traceablity, increased food fraud, and waste. FoodChain, a Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) solution, would identify the provenance of food and cases such as mislabelling, tampering, & contamination which costs approximately $65 billion annually in the US alone. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
FoodChain is beneficial for both producers and consumers. While giving producers insights of downstream activities, it provides trusted and transparent food products for consumers. Also helps govt regulatory bodies such as the FDA to trace back source of contamination in case of outbreak due to food |
How will the solution works |
Producers, distributors and retailors are linked and RFID tags are used to track movement of product. IoT will be used to monitor temperature and other aspects where required. By covering the product's lifecycle and transferring the relevant data to the blockchain, we created a transparent and trusted record that consumers can rely on. FoodChain leads to less revenue loss due to fraud, compliance with regulation and quality assurance for customers. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Blockchain adoption is only in the emerging stage in developing countries. The only competitor who has implemented a similar project is IBM who provide undisclosed/private solutions to companies. |
