Abstract:
    Among the big cities of Pakistan, Rawalpindi being the twin city of Islamabad (the capital of Pakistan) has a great importance. One of the main roads of Rawalpindi is the Peshawar Road or N-5. It passes through the center of the city. As there is no Rawalpindi by-pass, all the Grand Trunk (G.T) road traffic passes through it in addition to the local city traffic which causes delay and congestion problems. The scope of our project will cover the portion of Peshawar Road commonly known as The Mall Road, from kutcheri chowk to GPO chowk, making the Peshawar Road signal free. This will include four intersections namely Kutchery Chowk, PC chowk, GHQ chowk, GPO chowk. This will help to reduce the travel time and user cost of the users using this road. Feasibility studies for new alternatives like the availability of right of way, presence of underground pipelines etc. will be conducted. Based on the pervious results and the feasibility studies, anti-congestion alternatives to these intersections will be suggested. The agency cost (construction cost), work zone user delay cost will also be measured for each alternative to make sure they are economical. Then with the help of PTV VISSIM, a microscopic multi-modal traffic flow simulation software, various scenarios will be simulated and analyzed. Based on the results from simulations, a better alternative will be suggested for each intersection.
