Abstract: | |
This final year project aims towards the development and characterization of biodegradable plastics made using mushroom roots and recycled agricultural waste. Pakistan is an agricultural country and a lot of crop residues like wheat and rice straw are continually burning up those leads to the formation of smog in multiple cities of Pakistan. Mycelium is a fast-growing vegetative part of a fungus which adapts to different shapes when growing in a mold and decomposes after 90 days in a natural environment as organic waste. The ability to form self-assembling bonds helps them to grow quickly on agricultural wastes and produce miles of thin fibers which bind to the substrate to form a strong biodegradable material and can easily be shaped to produce packaging materials, architecture, and various new designed objects. Mycelium-based materials are a potential substitute to polystyrene like hazardous plastics with its benefit of cost-effective & totally recyclable material. | |
