Abstract:
In Pakistan, there have been 1290 wildfires in 2022 alone. A lot of forests and wildlife are destroyed due to these wildfires and many precious lives of firefighters are lost in attempts to extinguish these fires. Our goal is to develop a VR telepresence robot, that will be able to go into high risk areas to extinguish these fires while saving the need of putting firefighters' life in jeopardy.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Recent floods in Pakistan proved that there is a dire need to take action against climate change. Let alone forestation, we've not been able to preserve the already present resources due to inefficient methods. The same goes for wildfires which can be easily avoided by telepresence robots.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
The rescue companies will need it to extinguish the wildfires without putting firefighters' lives in danger. It would be a life savior for firefighters as well as the part of the society being affected by the climatic changes due to wildfires.
How will the solution works
The robot will incorporate an Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset, a Raspberry Pi 4 with camera mounted on a custom made gimbal. Video feed from the RPi camera will be streamed directly to the VR headset over wifi. The axis data from headset along with the control inputs from Oculus controllers will be transmitted to the RPi onboard the robot over wifi. The gimbal will move the camera according to the axis data of headset while the robot will move according to the control inputs from controllers.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Currently, there are no direct competitors as such robot hasn't been developed by any company. Our solution is different in a way that it will provide the operator with an immersive view of the hazardous environment and enable them to better understand the situation and act accordingly.
