| Packaging materials are composed of thick layer of Styrofoam, which requires 500 years to breakdown. There is a need for eco-friendly and sustainable packaging material. Mushroom mycelium is fast-growing and can be easily grown on agriculture waste. It can fit into any mold-like dense foam. And the resulting product is plastic free, home compostable, and can break down in 45 days. |
| What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
| Styrofoam and polystyrene are mostly used for packing materials. There is a need to shift from non-biodegradable, and non-recyclable to environment-friendly packaging material. Mycopack provides a sustainable, renewable, cost-effective alternative for packaging. |
| Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
| Mycopack generation will benefit mushroom cultivars. It will reduce transportation costs by using local materials as feedstock, benefiting local farmers. It will benefit the global economy because large companies have directed their attention to sustainable packaging. |
| How will the solution works |
| Mycelium can be easily grown on a mineral salt medium. After harvesting by centrifugation, it is mixed with agricultural waste, placed in a custom shape mold, and allowed to grow. Mycelium invades the agriculture waste and feed on it. After maximum growth, mycelia is inactivated by heating. Plastic-free, natural, water-resistant product is ready, without the need for light, water, and chemical additives. |

| Ecoactive is a US-based country that is using mycelium for packaging. Currently, there are no competitors in Pakistan. So, our product is innovative, and market competitive. |
