Abstract:
    Air Nomads provides renewable energy with Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). It is implementable on highways with large vehicles traveling. This traffic can be harnessed to power streetlights. The project is specific to energy production, measurable by electricity production, and achievable with local manufacturing capabilities. VAWT is being implemented internationally, hence it is realistic.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    Fossil fuels constitute 80% of our energy needs but have high adverse effects from pollution to global warming. Solar and wind power in Pakistan do not exceed 5% of total energy production because of high power costs. The project will cater to this issue with the wind turbine.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   The project aims to solve growing energy needs and to reduce the energy consumption of fossil fuels. The public needs electricity and they would benefit from this project. The National Highway and Motorway contribute 3% of the total roads and can benefit from the additional energy production too.
How will the solution works
    We have constructed a unique helix design for a turbine that is a hybrid of two types of VAWT (Darrieus and Savonius). In our design, the streamlines that strike against the face of the concave side of the helix transfer its momentum to the blade and instead of passing by the turbine, they are forced to the second turbine thus making full use of all the sides of the helix. We are also using pair of counter-rotating turbines on the same axis to increase power generation potential.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Local science fair projects at a small scale remained at experimental stages. Companies like Smart Energy Corporation and Arborwind produce VAWT on large scale. The solution is unique due to design changes in blade structure and alternator. Steps are ensured to avoid mechanical failures as well.
