Currently Underground water resource of Quetta city is under tremendous stress and is under constant deterioration. The impurities present in water (such as Total dissolved solids (TDs), Chloride, coliform) are not properly treated due to which many people of the city suffer from severe water borne disease. The water table in Quetta is decreasing consistently due to inadequate precipitation, and lack of water management system. Extracting Underground water is a very expensive process and takes a lot of time and resources. The water of hanna lake is readily available and very cost efficient source of water, but needs to be properly treated before drinking. The Quetta city has extreme weather variations in winters surface water freezes and water quality in general increases. In summers water becomes more soluble and its pH slightly increases. 1610 Effect of Size of Aggregate and Potassium Titanate on the Behavior of Porous Asphalt NoPoverty Porous asphalt (PA) has been widely used in the USA, Europe, and Japan for the benefit of quick drainage in rainy days and to reduce accidents. Its application in Pakistan is very limited. Western and Southern parts of Pakistan experience arid weather conditions, in fact the annual rainfall in these regions is less than 150 mm. Due to Pakistan’s inadequate transportation infrastructure, most of the water is lost as a surface runoff. The stagnant water on the roads causes urban flooding, hydroplaning and create potholes which leads to majority of cracks and accidents. The use of porous asphalt provides the ability to drain water from the surface of the road and the infiltrated water can be used to recharge the groundwater naturally. Infiltration capacity of porous asphalt depends upon the shape and gradation of the aggregate. Hence this study will focus on determining the suitable shape and gradation of aggregates for porous asphalt without compromising its strength. Compared to hot-mixed and warm-mixed technologies, the total strength of porous asphalt is comparatively lower. To fill this gap, Potassium Titanate will be added to the asphalt mixture.

Hence, our aim is to reduce the sectional area by inducing hollow steel thin section in beam, which will result in reducing the weight of the beam. Also, to improve its flexural and shear strength of the composite structure/beam polypropylene fiber will be induced. In this work we will insert different percentages of polypropylene fibers in composite hollow beam (i.e., 1% 1.5% and 2% by volume of cement) to analyze the flexural and shear response of the beam. We will also use different size reductions of hollow composite beams up to 20%, 30% and 40% to avoid heavy weight structures, keeping the economical aspect in view.

First, we will assess the nature and engineering properties of the encountered subsurface strata and then provide geotechnical recommendations for the design of the foundation for future projects. The data that will be obtained through the investigation will help in the construction of various sites encountered in our project, through different site investigations including in-situ and laboratory testing. The report made after the investigation will only contain data that can only be used for the campus and may not be sufficient for other projects or other uses. The results of our investigation will evaluate the subsurface conditions on the site around the proposed building and will provide geotechnical bearing capacity and recommendations for the construction.

Currently, the Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) service chain is entirely non-existent in Pakistan. In this context, a household survey will be conducted in Bahria Enclave Islamabad to collect data regarding the existing fecal sludge management system. Then a financial and technical FSM model comprising of the whole service chain will be designed for this area. The potential for decentralized biological treatment of the leachate from the sludge drying bed will be the main engineering focus. Our project will aim to improve onsite sanitation services by developing a sustainable FSM model. It will also reduce stress on freshwater resources by treating septic tank sludge. The produced algal biomass will be evaluated for its bioenergy value as well as fish feed replacement capacity. While urban flooding ensues several catastrophes, one of the major problems is flood water entering houses, shops and other buildings. Many houses and buildings are located in places which regularly get inundated during torrential rains for several reasons including unfortunate location, poor city drainage etc. This causes unnecessary economic losses and inconvenience. Currently Pakistan has no standard available solution. Therefore, people try to prevent the water from entering their buildings with their own solutions primarily by putting sandbags in front of the entry or by building temporary masonry walls. While the sandbags are effective at the job it has several issues. For instance, they are too heavy and cumbersome to relocate, they require a lot of storage space etc. And they do not completely block water especially after they are sufficiently wet. In short, there need to be a well designed and effective solution to flooding of buildings to prevent damages. The objective of this project is to provide a budget friendly practical solution that directly addresses the above need. A smart portable domestic flood gate will be developed. This smart invention will prevent the flood water to enter into the houses etc. It can be easily installed and removed. The device will require minimal maintenance.

Rendered homeless, millions were affected. Current damage detection techniques include visual inspections. However, they are time-consuming and costly, therefore not suitable for post-disaster scenarios (Liu. et al, 2019). Hence, there is a need to develop a technique that makes post-disaster damage detection quick and cost-effective. Strcutural Health Monitoring is considered for this purpose. SHM techniques so far lack two important functions: (1) Global damage Assessment does not give the location of damage and (2) They lack digital visualization. This project aims to develop a working prototype (including input, processing and output). The prototype receives input from accelerometers regarding the acceleration of the structural elements and another input from the building information model containing data regarding the structural elements. The code then utilizes this data and performs instant processing to analyze whether or not the individual elements are damaged. The damaged elements are then visualized on the building information model. The prototype is to be validated on an existing structure.

Due to lack of availability of parking spaces in Marakiz / central business district (CBD) of Islamabad city, valuable time of road users is wasted, more fuel is consumed while idling or cruising around parking lots, leading to more CO2 emission produced and potential accidents caused by abundance of moving vehicles in disorganized parking lots. This research work will focus on providing a solution for an efficient parking system. For research purposes, the authors have taken I-8 Markaz in Islamabad as a case study. First the main parking problems to be identified from the traffic and parking spaces data collected from the field. Data analysis will be done for both off and on street parking. After analysis a software model will be created to observe the existing patterns. Multiple solutions will be provided and from these solutions the best possible solution is to provide a system which will work on artificial intelligence. This will help the road user to find parking space without wasting the travel time. By the introduction of smart parking drivers don't really have to cruise for vacant parking spaces. This can save alot of time of the drivers and reduce congestion in the urban areas.

One of the main roads of Rawalpindi is the Peshawar Road or N-5. It passes through the center of the city. As there is no Rawalpindi by-pass, all the Grand Trunk (G.T) road traffic passes through it in addition to the local city traffic which causes delay and congestion problems. The scope of our project will cover the portion of Peshawar Road commonly known as The Mall Road, from kutcheri chowk to GPO chowk, making the Peshawar Road signal free. This will include four intersections namely Kutchery Chowk, PC chowk, GHQ chowk, GPO chowk. This will help to reduce the travel time and user cost of the users using this road. Feasibility studies for new alternatives like the availability of right of way, presence of underground pipelines etc. will be conducted. Based on the pervious results and the feasibility studies, anti-congestion alternatives to these intersections will be suggested. The agency cost (construction cost), work zone user delay cost will also be measured for each alternative to make sure they are economical. Then with the help of PTV VISSIM, a microscopic multi-modal traffic flow simulation software, various scenarios will be simulated and analyzed. Based on the results from simulations, a better alternative will be suggested for each intersection.

AffordableAndCleanEnergy Having so many large reserves of coal, Pakistan is facing an energy crisis because coal is not being utilized. The main reason is that during coal incineration in power plants, high sulfur content of coal poses serious environmental problems owing to sulfur dioxide emission. It causes acid rain which has harmful effects on lakes and vegetation and causes corrosion. The need for sulfur removal is to sell coal to customers whether they have installed pollution control measures or not, to reduce transportation and combustion cost, and to reduce load on flue gas scrubber. So, leaching is one of the most common methods employed for coal desulfurization. Alkali leaching is an effective method for demineralization of coal by reducing most of the mineral-rich constituents. The reason for attacking the alkali into the major minerals may be due to the presence of hydroxyl ion in the leachants, which has high affinity towards the clay bearing minerals. Regeneration of spent alkali and acids reduces the cost of chemicals in the cleaning method. The spent solution contains not only silicate and aluminates but also contains Fe, Al, and trace elements of Zn, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Ba, Ti etc. The regenerated reagents from spent solution can be reused which is likely to be the best way to develop a commercial process for removal of minerals from the coal.
