Sustainable Concrete Revolution by Harnessing Seawater, Sea Sand, and Volcanic Ash with Machine Learning for Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective Construction |
IndustryInnovationAndInfrastructure |
Concrete remains an indispensable material in construction due to its strength, durability, and versatility. However, traditional concrete production heavily relies on cement, generating substantial CO₂ emissions, exacerbating environmental and climate challenges. In Balochistan, a coastal region with limited resources, conventional construction methods intensify sustainability concerns, highlighting a pressing need for innovative solutions. The presence of volcanic ash (VA) in Balochistan poses significant environmental and health risks. Left unmanaged, this toxic material impacts air quality, disrupts agriculture, and endangers ecosystems. Freshwater scarcity further complicates the region’s sustainability efforts, as frequent cyclones and flooding compromise water availability for both drinking and construction needs. Additionally, river sand, essential in traditional concrete mixtures, is costly and difficult to source locally, increasing logistical demands and further straining resources.
In response to these challenges, this project explores sustainable construction solutions by developing two types of concrete mixtures. The first, referred to as "traditional concrete," involves partially replacing cement with varying percentages of volcanic ash (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%) while using freshwater and river sand in the mix. The second type, termed "modified concrete," also replaces cement with volcanic ash but incorporates 100% seawater and sea sand instead of traditional freshwater and river sand. By reimagining waste materials and adapting to Balochistan’s unique resource constraints, this approach aims to reduce environmental impact, conserve vital resources, and promote resilience in the region’s construction practices.
A machine learning-based prediction model will be employed to optimize the volcanic ash proportion, leveraging the analysis of compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths to refine the performance of these innovative concrete types. |

Optimization of mechanical properties in palm tree fiber-reinforced concrete using machine learning for sustainable construction |
IndustryInnovationAndInfrastructure |
The construction industry, a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, urgently requires sustainable materials and innovative methods to reduce its environmental footprint. Our project, Optimization of Mechanical Properties in Palm Tree Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Using Machine Learning for Sustainable Construction, addresses this challenge by integrating treated palm tree fibers (a prevalent agricultural waste in Pakistan) and fly ash (an industrial by-product) into concrete mixes.
This novel approach not only mitigates the environmental issues associated with waste management but also enhances the mechanical properties of concrete, such as compressive and flexural strength. The natural properties of palm tree fibers improve tensile strength, ductility, and thermal insulation, while fly ash reduces cement usage and increases durability through its pozzolanic action. Leveraging locally available resources ensures cost-effectiveness and aligns with principles of a circular economy.
The project introduces machine learning as a transformative tool to optimize mix designs, minimizing traditional trial-and-error methods and reducing resource wastage. By applying advanced algorithms, we develop predictive models to achieve precise formulations, ensuring superior mechanical performance and environmental sustainability.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), this project contributes to sustainable urban development. Its potential applications extend to civic bodies, industries, and small-scale construction, offering scalable, data-driven solutions to the construction sector in Pakistan.

Cardiac arrest (CA) is a life-threatening condition that necessitates immediate and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). High-quality chest compressions are crucial for the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), yet both professionals and laypersons often perform them incorrectly. Various devices have been developed to provide real-time feedback on compression quality, but they have limitations, including discomfort and inaccurate data due to sensor displacement. This interdisciplinary project presents a novel solution using smart textiles to develop flexible, wearable devices. We have designed and developed smart gloves integrated with pressure sensors and inertial measurement units (IMUs), achieving high detection accuracy and wearability. The smart gloves measure key parameters of chest compression quality, including compression depth, rate, and hand position. This work represents the first e-textile-based smart gloves for real-time assessment of chest compression quality during adult CPR. By combining smart textile design and data analytics, we have created lightweight, adaptable, and replicable prototypes. These smart gloves have the potential to improve CPR training, enhance patient outcomes, and save lives. |

Hair fertilizer |
IndustryInnovationAndInfrastructure |
the creative process of turning discarded human hair into liquid nitrogenous fertilizers. In order to extract nitrogen in the form of ammonium and nitrate ions, reductive cleavage of hair proteins was accomplished using potassium hydroxide (KOH) and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) as solvents. When it came to dissolving hair and extracting nitrogen, KOH outperformed TMAH, according to comparative studies. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) was used as a test crop in a vegetation pot experiment to assess the synthetic fertilizers. Four treatments were used: commercial NPK (15-15-15) fertilizer (T4), KOH-based fertilizer (T2), TMAH-based fertilizer (T3), and no fertilization (T1). The broadcasting approach was used to apply fertilizers at a nitrogen equivalent of 50 kg/ha to four pots for each treatment. Both KOH- and TMAH-based fertilizers performed better than commercial NPK fertilizer after 28 days, according to plant growth criteria as height, leaf count, and fresh and dried weights of edible portions. These results support the innovative use of discarded human hair in agriculture by demonstrating its potential as an efficient and sustainable supply of nitrogen. |

SCOBY MEMBRANE |
CleanWaterAndSanitation |
Water filtration is a critical process for ensuring access to clean and safe water, addressing challenges like contamination from heavy metals, pathogens, and other pollutants. Among various filtration technologies, ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are widely used due to their ability to remove fine particles and microorganisms. However, traditional UF membranes, often made from Poly Ether Sulfone (PES), are expensive, prone to fouling, and environmentally unsustainable due to their non-biodegradable nature.
To address these issues, this project explores Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) membranes as a sustainable and economical alternative. SCOBY membranes, derived from kombucha fermentation and treated with 0.3% H₂O₂, exhibit excellent permeability and are both renewable and biodegradable. Further enhancement through grafting with tannic acid improves their hydrophilicity, heavy metal ion binding, antimicrobial properties, and mechanical strength. IndustryInnovationAndInfrastructure |
The construction industry, a vital sector of global economies, often suffers from inefficiencies, opacity, and corruption in its tendering processes. These issues lead to distrust, financial losses, and compromised project outcomes. SMARTEND, a blockchain-backed e-tendering system, aims to revolutionize the tendering ecosystem by leveraging blockchain technology to ensure transparency, security, and efficiency. This innovative platform facilitates the creation, submission, evaluation, and awarding of construction tenders through a decentralized, tamper-proof system.
SMARTEND employs blockchain technology to establish a decentralized ledger that records every transaction and interaction in the tendering process. This ensures data integrity, making it impossible for unauthorized parties to alter or manipulate tender documents and bids. The system's smart contracts automate key processes, such as bid submission deadlines, evaluation criteria, and award notifications, reducing human intervention and the likelihood of bias or errors. By fostering a transparent and secure environment, SMARTEND enhances trust among stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, and clients.
One of SMARTEND’s key features is its ability to address transparency issues by offering real-time tracking of tender submissions and evaluations. Each tender process is recorded immutably on the blockchain, ensuring accountability and providing an auditable trail of all decisions. The platform also incorporates advanced encryption protocols to safeguard sensitive data, maintaining confidentiality while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
SMARTEND also tackles inefficiencies by integrating a user-friendly interface for seamless interaction and providing real-time analytics to aid decision-making. By digitizing and automating tender processes, the platform reduces paperwork, processing times, and administrative costs. Furthermore, its decentralized nature eliminates reliance on intermediaries, resulting in faster, more cost-effective tendering operations.
In the context of Pakistan’s construction industry, where corruption and inefficiencies are prevalent, SMARTEND holds transformative potential. By fostering trust and fairness in tendering, the platform can encourage broader participation from both local and international contractors, enhancing competition and improving project quality. Additionally, the use of cryptocurrency or digital tokens for transactions could facilitate cross-border payments, further streamlining the tendering process.
SMARTEND not only addresses long-standing challenges in construction tendering but also sets a benchmark for transparency and efficiency in the industry. By leveraging the power of blockchain, it represents a paradigm shift toward a more secure, equitable, and technologically advanced tendering framework. This system has the potential to reshape the construction industry by building trust and ensuring the successful execution of projects.
