Abstract: |
An omni directional treadmill combined with virtual reality lets the user walk in the virtual world similar to real life. With the help of recirculating array of ferromagnetic discs the user will be able to walk in every direction without limitations. This creates an immersive experience that has far-reaching applications in healthcare, research, e-sports industry, military, fitness, and training. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
With the advancements in technology, the next step in interaction with the digital world is creating a system that is capable of emulating our physical movements in virtual reality. This would enable us to truly experience events that are too dangerous ,costly or impossible to recreate in real life. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
It will assist physiotherapists in rehabilitation of patients, emergency respondents and military in training, real estate agents in marketing, gamers in immersive games. Peoples’ interactions in virtual environments like metaverse can be more immersive. It will assist thousands of people. |
How will the solution works |
Ferromagnetic materials attached to a magnetic material slide along it if pushed in the direction tangential to the surface. An array of ferromagnetic discs is attached to a hemispherical magnetic surface. When the person walks on the surface formed by these discs, the discs glide along the magnetic surface in such a way that they keep recirculating from the other side.
The natural physical movements of the user are tracked by the sensors and send to the virtual reality application.

Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
The treadmills currently available either let the user walk on a frictionless surface or on a motorized 2-axis treadmill. The former is unnatural for most users while the latter is too complex and expensive. Our solution offers natural walk to users while being unmotorized and reasonable in price. |
