Abstract:
Our idea is to build a system that would monitor Asthmatic patients in real time. Deep learning algorithms running on an edge device can identify asthmatic sounds and display the severity.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
We aim at improving the quality of life of asthmatic patients. An asthma attack can be life-threatening. Predicting an attack may help the patient to take measures to avert any fatal incident.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Our device can be used by doctors to assist them in diagnosing and monitoring asthmatic patients. Our device can also be used at homes as a self-management tool by the patients to help them understand their current medical situation.
How will the solution works
A microphone will be used to record the respiratory sounds (cough, wheeze, etc.) which would then be sent to our edge computer, and after extracting the relevant sound and filtering out noise, deep learning algorithms will take the sound as input and display the results; Asthmatic or Non-Asthmatic(Low, Moderate or High Severity). Other sensors such as a heart rate sensor can also be used to give accurate results.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Currently in Pakistan, there isn't any technological device that would assist asthmatic patients to monitor their current condition. There is also very less work done in determining the severity of the disease (Low, Moderate or High).
