Abstract: |
The proposed project aims to design and develop an additive manufacturing (3D printing) system that combines two already present systems, i.e. FDM and SLA, to produce a more efficient system. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
The proposed method of Rapid prototyping will allow free-from additive manufacturing. The fast curing of the photopolymer will allow to print complex structures without external supports. Furthermore, this method has multi-material capability for the manufacturing of MEMS and other Electronics. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Due to its multi-material capability this method can be applied for 3D printing of micro-electromechanicalsystems (MEMS)and will enable 3D printing of a structure with embedded sensors. This will reduce time to present new designs and enable the creation of entirely new structures. |
How will the solution works |
The printer is based upon two existing systems. It will use the extrusion method of an FDM printer and the curing method of SLA printers. The Extrusion method will consist of a set of calibrated peristaltic pumps which will pump the photopolymer on the printer bed through specific nozzles. Then the Photopolymer will be cured through a setup of UV lasers and LEDs. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
This method of additive manufacturing has several advantages over the other methods currently being applied. It combines the advantages of FDM and SLA while eliminating the negative or costly aspects from each process presenting a printing concept with significant commercial value. |
