| Our idea is centered around the recycling of waste cigarette stubs. It is a process that will use wasted cigarette stubs and turn them into pure cellulose acetate which will be turned into paper. |
| What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
| Our idea will improve waste management and recycling. It will reduce the load on dumpsites and landfills and reduce the blocking of drainage systems. It will introduce a green, low-energy, and low-cost cigarette-stub recycling process. |
| Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
| The primary beneficiaries of this process will be paper manufacturers as they will acquire a cheaper raw material to produce paper. In a broader aspect, everyone in society will benefit from reduced pollution as 20.6% population of Pakistan smokes daily and produces waste stubs. |
| How will the solution works |
| Wasted cigarette stubs will be collected and dissolved in an organic solvent. The stubs are filler material made of cellulose acetate and it will dissolve in the organic solvent. The mixture is then filtered to remove the solid waste such as soot and dirt. The filtered mixture is then distilled to obtain the pure cellulose acetate and the solvent. The cellulose derivative is then turned into pulp and dried to make paper. |
| Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
| There are no major entities recycling cigarette stubs in Pakistan so this is a new market. In context to the production of paper, our competitors will be paper production companies but we will have a competitive advantage because our raw material will be much cheaper. |
