Abstract: |
The idea is to create a biodegradable syringe that is cheaply produced using 3D-printed, bio-sourced polymers, and can be readily employed in health care settings. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Hospital waste management is a huge issue and it is only going to get exacerbated with the advent of mass vaccinations all over the world. A biodegradable syringe would provide an efficient way to discard a syringe while ensuring that it is only used once. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
A biodegradable syringe would minimize the biohazard that arises from illegal dumping of hospital waste, by reducing the need for landfill sites, or incinerators. Moreover, with Pfizer alone set to produce about 1.2 billion doses of the COVID-10 vaccine, we can ensure a very high for the product. |
How will the solution works |
The syringe would be produced from a biopolymer that is obtained from secondary feed sources. Since Pakistan is an agricultural country, this secondary source would not only be very cheap to obtain but also promote greater agriculture to enhance its production. We would then use this biopolymer to produce biodegradable syringes through 3D printing, which would reduce costs even more, and provide us with a sustainable solution for health care settings. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
The only competitors would be people who are making syringes and our solution is different in only one way: it doesn’t take millions of years to naturally degrade. |
