Abstract:
(1): Replacement of styrofoam and plastic using "Biodegradable and Sustainable" mushroom packaging. (2): Replacing plastic utensils with Bamboo utensils.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Food security, long-term effects on health, sustainability, reduction of Carbon-footprint, social development, and environmental justice.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Every individual, household, and industry needs to opt for sustainable development to reduce impact on environment, save money, improve the livelihood of individuals and communities, win new business, reduce waste and carbon emissions, save resources, create market and attract lenders and investors.
How will the solution works
To make mushroom packaging we use two inputs: Agricultural by-products like corn stalks and the root structure of mushrooms called "Mycelium". No petrochemicals / Plastics are needed. This Mycelium fungus and agricultural waste form a Bio-composite called "Mycofoam". After molding and resting of it is done for a couple of days, the material is fully formed. It is then heat-treated and dried to stop the growing process. The material in the ground easily decomposes, providing nutrients to grass.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Plastic and Styrofoam Industries are our biggest competitors. But the greatest comeback we have is "sustainability". The world needs changing, it is a 'now or never situation', so we believe introducing sustainable green products will play a major role in reducing carbon footprint and env. impact.
