Abstract: |
BioRadar is a portable IoT device that uses a 60 GHz pulsed-coherent millimetre-wave radar sensor for contact-free monitoring of respiration rate, heart rate and heart rate variability. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Current contact-based equipment incurs a risk of transmission of diseases among users and hospital staff, especially during pandemics such as COVID-19. Our device offers an accurate and safe solution to monitor vital signs without the need for placement of leads and straps. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
An estimated 46 deaths occur every hour in Pakistan due to heart diseases. Patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases can benefit from BioRadar, as well as patients suffering from stress, sleep apnea, burn wounds, and infants in incubators. |
How will the solution works |
BioRadar uses the XM112 radar module from Acconeer, which has a 60 GHz millimetre-wave radar sensor. Radio pulses that reflect off from the chest are used to record the raw chest movements. The respiration and heartbeat waveforms are extracted using DSP filters, followed by the application of time-domain algorithms for finding the vital signs. A Raspberry Pi will run these algorithms in real-time and transfer the data to an IoT cloud service. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
(1) Camera-based methods: BioRadar ensures protection of privacy as it does not take images like a camera, (2) Other radar-based methods: Our device is less costly, consumes less power and has a very small form-factor, making it ideal for integration with low-power embedded systems. |
