Abstract: |
Our Microbial Fuel Cell is a new approach of treating waste water, domestic or industrial, with the help of microbes along with the production of clean, emission and toxins free “Bioelectricity” |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
The problem of water deficiency resulting from population growth is one of the biggest challenge and a limitation to sustainable development of our society. Our idea of eco-friendly waste water treatment and electricity generation simultaneously can solve this problem and is fulfilling SDG 6. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Pakistan ranks third in the world facing acute water shortage. Only about 20% of our population has access to clean water. By using microbial fuel cells we can clean waste water and produce clean energy, both on the lowest cost possible. Our approach is beneficial to the environment as well. |
How will the solution works |
Our solution will generally be based on the redox reactions occurring at the electrodes that will generate electrons and will in turn produce electricity. Our MFC will consist of two chambers, anaerobic chamber with waste water and anode, housing our microbial community and a second chamber with a cathode in contact with air. The two electrodes will be connected via copper wire containing a load. Electrons generated by the microbes will move along the wire and will produce Bioelectricity. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Consumers of conventional wastewater treatment are our rivals. Without the use of treating or filtering it, our solution will use the sludge directly and bacteria will use the sewage water for electricity production and the left over material can be used as manure and for various other purposes. |
