Abstract:
    Porous asphalt (PA) has been widely used in the USA, Europe, and Japan for the benefit of quick drainage in rainy days and to reduce accidents. Its application in Pakistan is very limited. Western and Southern parts of Pakistan experience arid weather conditions, in fact the annual rainfall in these regions is less than 150 mm. Due to Pakistan’s inadequate transportation infrastructure, most of the water is lost as a surface runoff. The stagnant water on the roads causes urban flooding, hydroplaning and create potholes which leads to majority of cracks and accidents. The use of porous asphalt provides the ability to drain water from the surface of the road and the infiltrated water can be used to recharge the groundwater naturally. Infiltration capacity of porous asphalt depends upon the shape and gradation of the aggregate. Hence this study will focus on determining the suitable shape and gradation of aggregates for porous asphalt without compromising its strength. Compared to hot-mixed and warm-mixed technologies, the total strength of porous asphalt is comparatively lower. To fill this gap, Potassium Titanate will be added to the asphalt mixture.
