Abstract: |
The objective of our project is to use the human placenta, which is material otherwise wasted post-delivery, to isolate the amniotic membrane from it to be used in clinical procedures such as treating skin burns, diabetic wounds, and ocular injuries. This membrane contains factors that enhance regeneration in the healing tissue making it an effective and cost-efficient bio-bandage. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
(1) The need for a user-friendly and promising method of treating wounds in diabetic patients.
(2) The need for a relatively inexpensive and biologically enriched method to treat severe burns.
(3) The need for an immunologically inert, and inexpensive scaffolding material in eye surgeries. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Allo-aid will be used on burn patients, diabetics with recurring wounds, patients with skin and eye ulcers, and other ocular injuries. According to a 2015 survey, in Pakistan, 146.8 patients per 100,000 ED visits are burn victims. Patients of the other aforementioned diseases will also use Allo-aid. |
How will the solution works |
The human amniotic membrane contains growth factors, collagen and has antimicrobial activity, enabling it to be used as a regeneration enhancing biological bandage.
We will be working in collaboration with hospitals. The placenta will be donated by pregnant patients who meet certain criterion. After assessment, this placenta will be transported to our organization for amniotic membrane extraction. We will then prepare batches for use in skin dressing, corneal implants, and patches respectively. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
This product has not been commercially introduced in the Pakistani Market and hence no local competition exists. |
