Abstract:
Design, development, and manufacturing of low-cost school furniture using recyclable plastic. Integrating Japanese carpentry techniques, automotive manufacturing principles, and Scandinavian product design philosophy to create a uniform set of parts that can be assembled without the use of metal fasteners to completely furnish classrooms, reducing associated transport costs via compact packaging.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Schools in rural Pakistan suffer from a lack of proper furniture, causing declining rates of admission. Our idea will streamline manufacturing and significantly reduce logistic costs by creating a compact set of parts that can be assembled on-site
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Our primary market is government schools. These schools suffer the most from a lack of furniture with provincial governments failing to meet the required threshold. In Sindh alone, at least 51,000 desks and tables are needed as per the data provided by the Education and literacy department.
How will the solution works
Our proposed solution is a set of standardized, compact parts (made from a recyclable plastic blend--likely HDPE & LDPE) that can be assembled via the integration of Sashimono-inspired joints. The parts are designed to be interchangeable, i.e, a chair and a table can be assembled from the same standard parts via re-organized structuring. All associated stress concentrations, loading conditions, topological optimization & ergonomics will be catered to in a holistic approach to product design.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Governments source their furniture from the local woodworking industry, where designs are outdated, plain, & bulky, resulting in increased transport and logistic costs. Our product will be aesthetic, encouraging positive learning experiences & delivered in a compact package, reducing overhead costs.
