Abstract:
Omni-directional UGV is a new type of UGV that uses omni wheels over regular wheels. This gives it 360 degree turns capability thus improving mobility greatly in contrast to generic UGVs.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Our main focus of this project is the design and development of omni balls. Currently, our UGV uses 3 omni balls but if we are able to implement a 4th ball, we could design the UGV to have transformative capabilities. This new design gives the UGV more versatility and becomes easier to operate.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Its uses can be applied in multiple fields. It can be utilized by the army for surveillance basis. Industries can develop commercial designs such as toys or even drone like concepts for the public.
How will the solution works
An omni-ball wheel is like omni wheel except that the wheel is spherical in shape. The sphere is divided into two hemispheres. Two hemispheres rotate passively, and the active rotational axis lies in the center of the Omni-Ball. Two tiny rollers are attached to the circumference of the hemispheres for smooth rotation and locomotion of the robot.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
As this is a new concept, there are little to no competitors in the market as of yet. However, like us there have been students from other universities who have suggested similar ideas. The main difference is that our design has the potential to have transformative and object climbing capabilities
