| Anthropogenic activities have led to an alarming amount of crude oil entering the ecosystems, raising environment concerns. Close to 3 million tonnes of crude oil has been noted to enter the seas each year, however, the lack of an oily layer covering the seas points to the presence of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria. The isolation of these bacteria can lead to oil cleanup solutions. |
| What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
| Waterways in Pakistan are polluted with all sorts of hydrocarbons that make the water unfit for regular use and consumption. This project directly targets these concerns and works to find a feasible solution for them. |
| Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
| This would directly benefit the communities living in the areas surrounding the water bodies being targeting as well as the ecological systems existing within the water bodies. |
| How will the solution works |
| Samples of oil contaminated water will be collected from surrounding local waterways and the oil sample will be tested for the variety of hydrocarbons present. The bacterial life will be isolated and identified from the samples made to go through various carbon utilisation tests. Comparison and further processing will lead to the final product. |

| The direct competition would be those involved in the physical cleanup of waterways. This idea offers a unique alternative to using physical labour and would be a much more sustainable approach. |
