Abstract: |
Lately, the manufacturing and usage of Electric Vehicles (EVs) are growing. Furthermore, the population of cars on the road is also on the rise, causing increasing traffic, especially in small-sized cities. Parking spaces, warehouses are also limited to tight spaces. This project looks into the design and fabrication of an electric vehicle with omnidirectional capabilities to solve these issues. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
At the present time, the existing wheelbases in many applicative environments have a less controllable degree of freedom than the available total degrees of freedom. By increasing the controllable degrees of freedom, we can improve the maneuverability of different types of vehicles. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Applications where maneuvering vehicles through tight spaces is a norm need this type of wheelbase. This wheelbase increases convenience for the drivers on the road and saves time in inventory management. Some of the most highly populated cities in the world with small areas would benefit from this. |
How will the solution works |
The basic working principle is the vehicle is capable of turning its tires to greater angles than conventional vehicles. Furthermore the tires are independent of each other and are able to propel themselves. This allows motion in omni-direction, which includes sideways motion, diagonal motion, and even zero radius turning. The driving tires include hub motors to provide propulsion, and each tire is turned using a separate motor. The multiple orientations of the wheels allow for these motion. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
The main competitors are Mecanum wheel driven vehicles. Such vehicles are already observed in robotics, warehouse loaders and motorized wheelchairs. Our vehicle can be used for civilian use on the road, which Mecanum wheels are not recommended for due to low durability and inefficiency. |
