Abstract: |
Urbanization increases the need for roads, parking lots, buildings etc. This introduces a reduction of land which naturally absorbs the amount of precipitation. The infiltration of rainfall in urban areas reduces continuously and results in urban flooding or stormwater. By using permeable concrete in our constructions, we will be able to mitigate urban flooding and recharge the groundwater table. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Many residential communities, sidewalks, and city parks are covered with concrete blocks laid on a layer of sand, acting as interlocking pavers. A disadvantage of interlocking pavements is that rainwater does not flow under the drainage layer, is susceptible to damage and flooding in heavy traffic. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Directly or indirectly public will be beneficiary. However, we will target the construction industry. Most of the organizations in my country are unaware of these pavements and are not networked with the current revolution in the construction industry that will maximize their organizational benefit. |
How will the solution works |
This idea will produce fine-grained concrete material and prototypes for paving. Concrete block samples will be tested in the laboratory, including specific gravity, compressive strength, and material durability. Samples will be placed in the field for further irrigation and vehicle crossing tests. This idea is expected to provide an alternative material for concrete blocks as an environmentally friendly interlocking paver. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
This idea had never been used in Pakistan. In countries i.e. Japan, and the USA where it is already used to a small extent, the strength was compromised due to the use of coarse aggregates. We will be adding admixtures specifically Sulphur to enhance the strength of these pavements. |
