Abstract:
Beam column joints are critical location for cracks to initiate.Shear and flexure deficient beam column joints after modeling in Abaqus will be subjected to quasi static loading and behavior of crack will be observed. This will help to understand the stress developments in the joint that leads to cracks in the beam or column causes progressive collapse of building.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Damaged reinforced concrete buildings from earthquakes revealed that collapse of structures were brought on by faulty beam-column junctions. The joints weaken due to poor detailing. In the reinforced concrete structure, beam-column joint is critical location for the crack to initiate the collapse.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Designers of Reinforced concrete structures need the results obtained by this study for designing the structure which would be more resilient to lateral loads (Earthquake loads). It would benefit the entire industry related to frame structures.
How will the solution works
A solution will prevent the increasing collapse caused by cracks in the beam-column joint. An experimental study of beam-column joints that are lacking in shear and flexure will be done after the beam-column joint has been modelled in FEA software and subjected to quasi-static loading and deformation. This will help in understanding stress development in joint that leads to cracks in the beam or column causes progressive collapse of building.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Retrofitting techniques were used to strengthen damaged beam column joints. This study will help in mitigation of progressive collapse due to damaged beam column joint.
