Abstract:
Bridges are live structures, which once constructed and put into service, deterioration commences due to repeated cycling loading, environmental effects and material degradation. Therefore, it is crucial to inspect them and assess their structural strength and serviceability. To reduce the efforts, we will be using photogrammetry, drones and AI to optimize the bridge health monitoring.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
The existing methods that are used to assess the bridges are dangerous, time-consuming, expensive and require resources that are not easily available. This project will focus on inspection via drones with simple and effective technology and equipment that is readily available in the market.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
The public and the government both can be considered beneficiaries of this project as the public is provided with rather safer roads/bridges to travel on and is made economically sustainable for the government because a stitch in time saves nine.
How will the solution works
    1. Drone flights to capture HD images of the bridge covering all aspects. 2. Use photogrammetry and AI to translate the pictures into point clouds. 3. Use the point clouds to create a 3D model of the bridge so that it can be analyzed. 4. Source original design and structural drawings and compare the model. 5. Calculate new load ratings for the bridge and compare them with the initial design. 6. Advise/suggest certain retrofitting techniques and/or re-iterate the allowable stress on the bridge
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
There are only selected civil engineering organizations in Pakistan that structurally monitor bridges. These organizations use conventional processes that are time and resource-consuming. Our solution uses techniques and processes that are simple, effective, and readily available in the market.
