Abstract:
Miners all over the world meet with many incidents due to fatalities and collapses. Diseases caused by mining are often disabling and ultimately lead to death such as silicosis, lung fibrosis, lung cancer, etc. Our project aims at creating a safety helmet model that comes with live location tracking, monitoring of air quality, detection of hazardous gases through IoT sensors, and real-time footage
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
The mining industry does not have a sophisticated infrastructure which leads to unfortunate incidents. We aim at making a safer environment with our safety helmets and monitoring system that can help prevent mining incidents.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
According to the Planning Commission of Pakistan, there are 5,000 operational mines in Pakistan with the direct employment of 300,000 workers. It can help miners to reduce health risks in mines. Moreover, the helmet model can also be tailored for individual clients outside the mining industry.
How will the solution works
We have an IoT-based smart safety helmet that includes sensors like MQ-135, DHT 11, a Force sensor, and an IR sensor. The sensors are connected to a microcontroller, ESP-32, which is connected to the HC-12 module for the wireless transmission of data. It is also attached to an ESP-32 camera for live transmission. In case of an emergency, the miner wearing the helmet will be notified through an attached buzzer, and the base station outside the mine will get real-time location and sensor data.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
Pakistan has no direct implementation of the same model. However, a student from Balochistan invented an “Eye Smart Helmet” to stop coal mine incidents. Our model is somewhat the same, with the addition of the live camera transmission and the inclusion of further sensors.
