Abstract: |
The project aims to research, design, fabricate and program a robot capable of using AI-based techniques for distinguishing weeds from crops and removing the target weed using a method that prevents crop damage. This research combines fields including AI Computer vision Image processing, Mobile Robotics, Mechanical design, and Agriculture into creating a viable solution for effective weed control. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
One of the major aspects of agriculture that Pakistan lacks far behind the world is ‘weeding’, i.e., the removal of any unwanted plants that interfere with the growth of crops. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective weeding methods that can significantly increase crop yield. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Weeding has the potential to improve yield by 30% (Wang, Zhang, & Wei, 2019). An increase in crop yield will directly increase the income of farmers and farming operations. It will reduce the need for imports of food and even enable Pakistan to export food. |
How will the solution works |
The robot will consist of a six-wheeled mobile platform mounted on a novel suspension with the ability to dissipate energy through relative motion. A four-wheel-drive mechanism will be implemented. For autonomous navigation of the robot mapping localization and path-planning techniques will be used. A preset camera will take an image and pass it to an algorithm to distinguish between crop and weed. The coordinates of the crop will be fed to the laser weeding mechanism which will destroy the weed |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Manual hand weeding is a labor-intensive and time-consuming ineffective process. The use of herbicides by manual methods is ineffective and results in harmful chemicals leeching into the soil. Precise laser weeding will overcome these downsides. |
