Abstract: |
40% of the plastic produced globally is packaging used only once and then discarded. It does not biodegrade, remains for thousands of years and breaks down into microplastics that contaminate the environment. The proposal is single time use packaging designed from wheat husk. It has better constructional properties as compared to other agricultural waste. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
The idea of the project is to help convert the linear i.e; make-use-dispose into the circular economy structure. 30% on land and 90% in water, the waste collected is Styrofoam food containers and cups. . Also Pakistan has the highest percentage of mismanaged plastic in South Asia.
|
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
The target market for the project is vast however specifically it is designed for local food stalls and cafeterias. The vendors use low-quality plastic food containers and the ratio of public stalls in Pakistan is relatively high as compared to the indoor dining. |
How will the solution works |
Wheat husk is cheap and readily available. It is first ground into powder. A natural adhesive is used as a binding agent. After a mold from steel is made and then heat press machine is used to provide the required shape of the product. It is mainly designed for dry foods such as rice, pasta, bakery items, pakoras, fried items etc. It can later be fed to animals or can be thrown on the ground as it is biodegradable in nature. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
The competitors of my project are all the cardboard and plastic packaging companies. As the project is for single use, people can discard the packaging without feeling guilty and causing pollution. |
