Abstract: |
To prevent flood destruction, this study focuses on mapping flood-prone areas to define hazard boundaries. Tentative study areas are Swat and Nowshera districts. Major hydrological parameters (discharge, precipitation, etc.) will be utilized in GIS and hydrologic modelling tools for flood mapping. Furthermore, structural damage to existing infrastructure will be assessed using fragility curves. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Due to continuous and repetitive construction in flood-prone regions, loss of life and property occurs every time a flood occurs. This happens because of a lack of knowledge regarding flood boundaries at the government and public levels. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
The majority of people living in flood-prone areas like Swat and Nowshera require clear-cut boundaries of where not to settle and carry out construction. By establishing such a preventive measure, thousands of lives can be saved while such calamities can be avoided in the future. |
How will the solution works |
With the available data, areas of different flood risk zones will be marked on maps using GIS and presenting 3D modeling of futuristic floods. Furthermore, comparing the destruction data of buildings with fragility curves will determine the extent of damage in various flood risk zones. Recommendations regarding preventative measures will be given based on the results. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
As per our literature review, previous versions of flood models and maps are present but those are outdated. The frequency of floods in recent decades has risen, therefore updating of models and maps is highly desirable keeping in view the recent floods. |
