Abstract:
Our project deals with feasibility of Kabul River for inland transport. Despite having sizeable rivers in Pakistan this mode of transportation remains absent. This study will investigate the potential of inland water transportation in Pakistan and to find if it is technically possible to become socio-economically sustainable when implemented with a systematic phase-wise plan.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
Inland waterways can handle 70 and 16 times more cargo than roads and railroads respectively. Additionally, waterways are 700/70 times safer in terms of accidents, 5/3 times more fuel efficient, and, 11/1.5 times less emitting than roads/railroads.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
Freight density on roads of Pakistan is expected to rise from 170 billion tons/km to 600 billion tons/km. To match over 3-fold increase in transport load per km, huge sum of investment on road infrastructure is required. So there is need to explore an alternative solution that is cost-effective.
How will the solution works
This study investigates the potential of development of inland waterways in Pakistan as a means to accommodate increased demand of the transportation sector and suggests an implementation plan that demonstrates its viability. Following points highlight the working and solution:1. Explore the feasibility of inland navigation in Kabul River KPK2. Discuss the potential impacts of establishing Inland navigation in Pakistan3. Suggest an implementation approach for Inland navigation
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
It will identify multiple areas of research to be explored by the engineers and scientists to further increase the knowledge bank available on this subject with respect to Pakistan
