Abstract: |
As drones are becoming cheaper and easier to use, their demand for inspections, reconnaissance, and exploration has been skyrocketed. However, they require human intervention, and having only a trained set of people in every industry can be limiting for its growth. We plan on developing inexpensive solutions for UAV autonomous mapping, path planning, and obstacle avoidance. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Surveillance, data collection, and analysis of indoor sensitive and GPS denied environments that required a specialized workforce before to be automated using onboard sensors. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
Precision Agriculture, Search and Rescue, Animal Control and Wildlife Monitoring, Weather Forecast, In the construction domain, building inspection,post-disaster damage assessment, site surveying and mapping, safety inspection, etc.
In fact, any department that requires Inspection and monitoring. |
How will the solution works |
We shall link a small available quadcopter (DJI Tello) with ground stations where a live video feed from the quadcopter will be processed using monocular visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). The position coordinates of the quadcopter shall be sent in return while the ground station builds a map, optimizes path, detects, and avoids obstacles using feature extraction, scaling, and other algorithms in the SLAM process. ROS, python, simulation tools like gazebo will be used. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
Using a simple, inexpensive, and minimal system with a single camera while the competitors are using highly expensive equipment makes us stand out. |
