| The current practice of manual Bill of Quantity (BOQ) preparation in Pakistan leads to cost overruns, delays, risk exposure, wastage of man-hours, financial losses, claims and disputes in construction projects. With BIM being one of the major technological advances, we aim to establish a framework that automates the generation of BOQs. |
| What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
| Our construction industry relies on manual quantity takeoffs and preparation of Bill of Quantities, a laborious and time taking process and prone to errors. With our idea, such issues can be resolved, because the modeler only needs to prepare the model and with one click, he can get an accurate BoQ. |
| Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
| The whole construction industry will benefit since it will increase the efficiency and accuracy of quantity and cost estimation of projects. Several man-hours and money spent on manual, tedious BOQ preparation, prone to errors and inaccuracies due to its reliance on human involvement, can be saved. |
| How will the solution works |
| We are preparing a Revit template, which will already contain all the elements and materials required to prepare the model as well as to generate the Bill of Quantities. In the background, a code developed on Dynamo will quantify every element present in a particular project and then it will relate those items with the desired schedule of rates (MES, MRS, etc.) to produce Bill of Quantities. This code will be added to Revit as an Add-on, which will be developed using Python. |
| Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
| At the national level, no effort is being made to improve the process of BOQ preparation and thus there are no competitors. However, much research has been made throughout the world to automate generation of BOQ but none of them is feasible to be applied in Pakistan’s construction industry. |
