Abstract: |
The Wankel Rotary Engine is the sole competitor to the piston engine. We would be designing, manufacturing, assembling and testing a scaled version of a rotary engine. The design phase incorporates an iterative technique accommodating ISO standards. Then motion analysis will be done via Solidworks. Auxiliary equipment are to be purchased while rest of the parts are to be manufactured via CNC. |
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ? |
Automobiles are out of the range of lower middle class. A primary factor of high costs is the expensive engines. Rotary engines are cheap and cars accommodating them will be cheaper as well. Rotary engines can give efficiencies above 60% if Hydrogen fuel could be used in future via safe storage. |
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ? |
All auto manufacturers can incorporate the Wankel Rotary engine in their cars, bikes, trucks, rickshaws etc. Not only is it more efficient in terms of power to weight ratio and torque, the rotary can be easily fabricated and can be inculcated in our automotive industry rapidly. |
How will the solution works |
A (somewhat) triangular rotor fits inside an epitrichoidal housing. The rotor follows a complex motion within the housing boundaries, ultimately rotating an eccentric shaft. There are 3 separate chambers formed b/w the rotor and housing simultaneously using apex seals. A carburetor injects fuel, sparkplugs cause ignition. Starter motor engages with the flywheel to start the engine, and a fuel pump uses dry sump to lubricate the planetary gears, seals and journal. The engine will be air cooled. |
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different |
All automakers are using the piston engine developed in 1876, Wankel engine is the only viable competitor to it up to this date. Rotary engine is more compact, less in weight & size, has lower vibrations, more power and torque, can rev higher and is cheaper and easier to fabricate. |
