Abstract:
    Solar Powered Waste Compaction Bin (SO-WAB) is a solar-powered waste compactor and segregator, which can hold up to 5 times more waste compared to non-compacting bins, reducing collection frequency by up to 80%. It has a waste holding capacity of 100L. SO-WAB helps in reduction of carbon footprint, reduced waste generation, smart way to collect waste & sort waste, and a green technology.
What is the unmet need in society that your idea will fulfill ?
    There is a dire need of solving the problem of appropriate waste sorting and to reduce the problems of overflowing of bins. SO-WAB achieves the above mentioned since it has automatic waste sorting, waste compaction, and fill level sensing.
Who needs it ? How many would benefit ?
   This is needed by almost all sections of the society and would benefit the society as a whole as we aim to substantially reduce waste generation. The major application areas are airports, shopping malls, bus stands, educational institutes, small residential schemes among several others.
How will the solution works
    The bin has an automatic opening flap. This automatic opening flap is where waste has to be put in. The waste then goes onto the conveyer belt where sensors are placed. The specific type of waste is detected and a flap opens into one of the four bins. The compaction mechanism starts. Once the fill level in the bin reaches 80%, it sends a message and the collection staff empties the bin. This bin is solar powered.
Who are your competitors ? How is your solution different
    Our competitors are waste collection companies who operate using obsolete waste collection mechanisms and charge very high costs for inefficient and inappropriate waste collection. Our solution is different because it automatically segregates and compacts the waste thus reducing collection costs.
